Fun fac t (hopefully) : I believe a Connie still holds the record for fastest commercial flight from NYC to DC (well DCA). Much faster planes can’t make up the difference in congestion and FAA rules.

I didn’t even realize this was the long weekend until I was reminded this morning. I will be spending it deep-cleaning the house, car, mowing and gardening . Weather is going to be great, no more rain thankfully .

“ AAA predicts 43 million Americans will make some kind of trip during the long holiday weekend”

I will not be one of them, and I’m good with that.

Driving up to Dearborn to visit The Henry Ford to see their Star Trek exhibit. Also, I won’t have to be at work.

I’ve got a half day at work and then heading out of town camping for the weekend with some coworkers. Over the last year or two, there’s been an infusion of some younger folks in the library (say, less than 40 and even one or two less than 30 ), so the library drinking club is going camping.

I compromised on my definition of camping   and agreed to place (and a backup place) that allegedly , a t least at one time, have a vault toilet so folks don’t have to bring their shovel. That seemed to be something that gave a few folks second thoughts. This is car camping anyway...

Not being willing to comprise on my desire for no other people while camping, we’re going out in the vicinity of the Very Large Array to hopefully find an area where even on Memorial Day weekend we shouldn’t run into any other people (excepting the possibility of a local rancher s, but they’re pretty few and far between out there ).

“The library drinking club.”

Sounds like fun. No, really. I would also love to see the VLA.

Another fun fact about the Connie: After Howard Hughes and Jack Frye set a record for flying from LA to DC, they stopped in Dayton on the way back  to give Orville Wright a ride. It was Orville’s last flight, and he commented that the wingspan of the Connie was greater than the distance he had flown on that famous day in 1903.

United on a 789. I think the biggest bus we are taking on this trip is an A330.

I stand corrected. We are on a 380 from ICN to LAX! I thought it was a 777 but I read my brother’s email wrong. Now I’m even more excited! Knocking a few new planes for me.

The VLA occupies some of my favorite area of NM. It is a stark ly beautiful area, and there are very, very few people around.

Also, it happens that US60 in the vicinity of the VLA isn’t a bad place to test out the top speed of your car. The road is basically dead flat and straight with lines of sight of many, many miles out on the San Agustin plain. There is also no traffic, and the area (at least when I lived went to school at NM Tech ) isn’t regularly patrolled by any law enforcement agency.
